Evaluating controlled human malaria infection in Kenyan adults with varying degrees of prior exposure to Plasmodium falciparum using sporozoites administered by intramuscular injection

This landmark pilot study evaluated the safety, infectivity and parasite-growth dynamics of controlled human malaria infection among Kenyan adults with different levels of previous malaria exposure. By establishing the feasibility of modern malaria challenge research in an endemic African setting, the study created an important platform for evaluating future malaria vaccines and medicines while investigating naturally acquired immunity.

This study evaluated lung-function patterns and associated factors among children and adolescents with sickle-cell disease in Kenya's Lake Victoria basin. Because pulmonary complications contribute to long-term illness and mortality, locally generated evidence can support earlier identification of respiratory impairment and better clinical follow-up.

Effectiveness of the RTS,S/AS01E malaria vaccine in a real-world setting over one year of follow-up after the three-dose primary schedule: an interim analysis of a Phase IV study in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi

This interim analysis examined the real-world effectiveness of RTS,S/AS01E after its introduction in selected areas of Ghana, Kenya and Malawi. The study adds implementation evidence beyond conventional efficacy trials and supports decisions about malaria-vaccine policy, programme delivery and post-introduction monitoring.

Safety of RTS,S/AS01E malaria vaccine up to one year after the third dose in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi: a Phase IV cohort event-monitoring study

This large Phase IV study evaluated RTS,S/AS01E vaccine safety after introduction through routine health services in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi. Embedded in the Malaria Vaccine Implementation Programme, it used prospective cohort event monitoring and hospital surveillance to generate real-world evidence following the primary three-dose schedule.

Population pharmacokinetics of lumefantrine in pregnant and non-pregnant women with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Western Kenya

This study compared lumefantrine pharmacokinetics and treatment response among non-pregnant women and women in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. The analysis addresses an important therapeutic question: whether physiological changes during pregnancy alter antimalarial drug exposure in ways that may affect treatment optimization.

This study combined laboratory screening and bioinformatics to investigate compounds from the ReFRAME drug-repurposing library for activity against malaria parasites. It assessed whether similarity between protein targets could help predict antiparasitic activity and accelerate the identification of promising therapeutic candidates.

This study developed a solid lipid nanoparticle formulation combining dihydroartemisinin and lumefantrine. It investigated whether nanoformulation could improve limitations related to solubility, bioavailability and drug exposure, and evaluated the resulting formulation in a preclinical malaria model.

This study assessed the prevalence of HIV-1, hepatitis C and co-infection among people who injected heroin and were enrolled through a rehabilitation programme in coastal Kenya. The findings contribute evidence for integrated screening, treatment and harm-reduction responses for a population facing overlapping infectious-disease risks.

It assessed factors associated with adherence and treatment failure, contributing evidence for more effective monitoring and support of patients receiving HIV care in resource-constrained settings.

Preparation, characterization, and optimization of primaquine-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles

This study developed and characterized a solid lipid nanoparticle formulation of primaquine, an antimalarial medicine used against relapsing malaria. The work investigated whether an appropriate drug-carrier system could improve delivery while helping address limitations related to bioavailability, dose frequency, and treatment-associated toxicity. It represents an early translational output from the CREATES nanomedicine platform.
