Overview: The Ahero Clinical Trials Unit, was established in 2019 and is located in Nyando Sub-County Hospital, Kisumu County. It operates under CREATES and Centre for Clinical Trials of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI CCR).
Research Focus and Surveillance:The unit oversees the Ahero Health and Demographic Surveillance Survey (AHDSS), which monitors a population of approximately 180,000 individuals. This surveillance system plays a crucial role in collecting comprehensive demographic and health data, supporting various phases of clinical trials from early to late stages. In early 2020, the AHDSS began collecting vaccination details for children under five years’ old who received the malaria vaccine as part of the EPI-MAL 003 study.
Facilities and Collaborations: Equipped with the best facilities e. g Clinical Research Lab, patient wards, Data Management Centers, technologies and equipment e.g. Electronic Data Capture, Centrifuges, Microscopes, Fridges, Cloud Storage, Desktops, Laptops and staffed by experienced medical professionals and researchers, the Ahero Clinical Trials Unit is committed to advancing medical knowledge and improving healthcare outcomes. It collaborates with local communities to address public health challenges and develop innovative healthcare solutions tailored to the region’s needs.
Leadership: The site is led by Dr. Bernhards Ogutu (MBChB, MMed, PhD), who serves as the Site Leader and Principal Investigator assisted by three Sub-Investigators and Professor Florence Oloo as the site Director.
