Study overview
The study evaluated aseptic, cryopreserved Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites administered to healthy Kenyan adult volunteers with different levels of prior malaria exposure. It examined safety, infectivity, parasite growth dynamics, naturally acquired immunity and the operational requirements for conducting controlled human malaria infection research in an endemic setting. The programme combined clinical monitoring, molecular parasite detection, immunology, participant engagement and research-governance systems. It created an important platform for accelerating the evaluation of future malaria vaccines and medicines in populations directly affected by malaria.
Results and current findings
The study demonstrated that controlled human malaria infection could be conducted in Nairobi with intensive clinical oversight and generated evidence on parasite dynamics, naturally acquired immunity, molecular detection and the practical lessons required for future challenge studies.
